The Tatev–Harjis trail begins at the monastery, leads through the entire village of Tatev, climbs into the neighboring mountains, and offers views of the Vorotan Gorge before descending through the forest. The route is more than 13 km long and takes approximately 5–6 hours on foot.
The trail also runs alongside the Vorotan River in sections and crosses a medieval bridge.
Culture and history
Tatev Monastery is a historic monument dating from the 9th century and was an educational, enlightenment, and spiritual center in the Middle Ages. Visitors can see fortress walls on cliffs, an old oil mill, the Pendulous Column, and old frescoes by European masters.
Near Tatev are Ts’uraberd, Alan T’agavor, Sapatakhut’, Menatsarr, Dik’, and Poghos-Petros Surb. In the surrounding area of Tatev are Astvatsatsin Surb Kusanats’ Anapat and Navik.
