Sissian: Hotels and accommodations

The Armenian government’s tourist destination of “Sisian” encompasses the town of Sissian, the Zorats Karer historical and cultural reserve, and the Vorotnavank monastery complex.

Geographical setting

Sissian lies on both banks of the Vorotan River and approximately 6–7 km south of the Yerevan–Meghri highway. The area around Sissian is associated with the Vorotan river basin, Shaki Waterfall, hot springs, and a mineral spring with a temperature of around 40°C in the village of Vorotan.

Culture

The Sisian History Museum Named After N. Adonts was founded in 1989 and became an independent museum in 1993. Its exhibition focuses exclusively on the territory of Sisian. In addition to its permanent exhibitions, the museum organizes temporary exhibitions and events.

The Church of St. Grigor Lusavorich (Gregory the Illuminator) in Sissian is an intact 6th-century structure. Sisian Ceramics also offers a batik-painting workshop inspired by the imagery of the Ughtasar petroglyphs.

Cuisine

Hatsatun is a restaurant affiliated with Sisian Ceramics and offers cooking classes based on the culinary traditions of Syunik. In a cooking class at Hatsatun, visitors learn to prepare a village feast with emmer wheat pilaf and oven-baked potatoes. Hatsatun serves traditional dishes, including harissa, fasting tolma, Zangezur salad, and local soups.
