Lokbatan: Hotels and Accommodation

Lokbatan is located near the Lökbatan mud volcano in the Qaradağ District of Baku. Those planning their trip with accommodation in Lokbatan may wish to book a hotel there.

Nature and Geology

The Lökbatan mud volcano has been protected in Azerbaijan as a natural monument of particular significance by a government resolution adopted in 1982. It rises approximately 130 metres above sea level. In 1998, Lökbatan was submitted as a natural site for inclusion on the UNESCO Tentative List under criteria vii, viii and ix.

The mud volcano is recorded as having erupted approximately 20 times. Unlike many other mud volcanoes, Lökbatan has no mud gryphons. Its geological structure contains Upper and Middle Pliocene deposits from the Absheron and Aghdjagil stages. The Pliocene deposits surrounding the mud volcano emerge at the surface as ridges. Lökbatan is described as a characteristic example of Azerbaijan’s 220 mud volcanoes and the approximately 600 mud volcanoes worldwide.

History and Culture

The name Lökbatan is associated with a historic caravan route between Khoja Hasan and Səngəçal; according to tradition, camels sank there in the marshland. The development of Lokbatan is linked to the establishment of an oil settlement in 1931–32, the blowout of Well No. 45 in 1934, and a residential area of reed houses on what is now S. Orucov Street.

The A. Amirov Palace of Culture has been operating in Lokbatan since 1951. It has a hall with 361 seats, as well as clubs for dance, visual arts, drama, sewing, recitation and sports.

Leisure and Exhibitions

The Cırtdan Children's Amusement Park in Lokbatan was established as a family attraction on 10,000 square metres, with various rides and entertainment facilities. Heydar Park in Lokbatan was redesigned for leisure use with green spaces, modern lighting, benches and fountains.

The Heydar Aliyev Centre includes a library, a small cafeteria, a conference room with 50 seats and an event hall with 220 seats. It also displays photographs documenting Heydar Aliyev’s visits to the Qaradağ District and the opening of major industrial facilities.
