Culture

History

Antonovo belongs to the parish of St. Elias Church in Velikorita; its history includes a stone church built in 1887 and a brick church consecrated in 1995. The former Elias Church in Velikorita was blown up during the German retreat in 1944.

A report prepared no earlier than November 1944 states that on 2 November, armed fighters entered the village of Antonovo and fired automatic weapons at a farmers’ meeting. The report also states that the chairman of the village soviet and two activists were killed in the attack on Antonovo. Matveyev, the official responsible for grain procurement, was wounded in the attack.

Medieval kurgans are mentioned in the Malorita District, including near Antonovo.

Nature

Velikorita Park was laid out in the 19th century at the same time as a new wooden manor house was built. Today, the park is a natural monument of local significance.

The Lukovo biological reserve was established in September 1994 to preserve one of the largest populations of yellow lady’s slipper in Belarus. It covers 1,523 hectares and is located in Malorita District, 1.5 kilometres north of the Lukovo Reservoir.

The Gusiak biological cranberry reserve preserves an extensive wetland in its natural state and provides a habitat for the bog cranberry. The Tsar Oak stands in the reserve.

The Pogezhin Tsar Oak is considered the oldest pedunculate oak in Belarus; it is 46 metres high and more than 800 years old.

Leisure and Transport

The Pogezhin Spring has an equipped bathing area. The Brest–Kovel railway line also runs through Malorita District.
