Hotels in Å iroki Brijeg: Borak, Monastery and Art
Široki Brijeg combines a medieval fortification, Franciscan architectural and art history, a protected spring, and events with strong local ties. The Borak fortification, the Franciscan ensemble, and Vrelo Lištice Borak represent different aspects of the town.
History
Locally, the medieval fortification is known as Borak. Its walls are 1 to 6 metres high and 1 to 1.5 metres thick. The fortification is located near several springs and secured the crossroads of the routes between Mostar and Duvno and between Herzegovina and the mountains. Concrete historical dates can also be found at the Franciscan monastery: the foundation stone was laid on 23 July 1846 by Bishop Fra Rafo Barišić. The foundation stone for the construction of a new church in the late Romanesque style was laid on 20 June 1905.
Culture
The Franciscan Museum and Gallery are located next to the Franciscan monastery and the Church of the Assumption of Mary. The exhibition spaces of the Franciscan Museum and Gallery host permanent and temporary exhibitions as well as various cultural events. The permanent exhibition at the Franciscan Gallery Široki Brijeg features predominantly works by Croatian painters and sculptors from modern and contemporary art. This focus is complemented by works by avant-garde and naïve artists. Thus, the adjoining exhibition spaces house both a permanent collection and changing cultural formats.
Nature
The Vrelo Lištice Borak spring is part of Široki Brijeg’s natural heritage. It is protected as a geomorphological natural monument. This means that the site is home to a specific natural monument with a clearly defined protection status.
