Šuica – Karst River, Nature and Cultural Heritage
The Šujica Plateau lies at an elevation of approximately 950 to 1,000 metres. The Šujičko Basin is one of the five named geographical areas of the Municipality of Tomislavgrad.
Nature
The Šujica River is a karst river that flows through the Šujičko polje and the Duvanjsko polje before disappearing underground again in the direction of Buško blato. As it passes through the Šujičko polje, it forms numerous meanders and has a calm, winding course. Its corridor provides a habitat for wetland birds and birds of prey, including ducks, herons, gulls, peregrine falcons and hawks.
Culture
The Parish Church of Saint Anthony in Šujica has stained-glass windows by the academic painter Mate Ljubičić and Stations of the Cross by the academic painter Nada Falout. The Chapel of Saint Jerome is located on Mount Rajkovača in the Parish of Šujica. The memorial cross on Rajkovača was erected in 2003 in memory of the Šujica residents who fell in the First and Second World Wars and the Croatian War of Independence.
A Mass is traditionally held on Rajkovača on the second Sunday in August. On 13 June, a solemn Mass was celebrated in the Parish of Šujica for the feast of Saint Anthony of Padua; it was preceded by a procession, and the Mass began in front of the outdoor altar in the churchyard.
History
Approximately 1 km downstream from Šujica stands the 17.2-metre-long stone Galečki Bridge, also known as the Roman Bridge, with five arches. It is attributed to the 1st century, when the area was under Roman rule, and is described as being approximately 2,000 years old.
During Roman times, a road ran through the area of the Šuica settlement from Salona, present-day Solin near Split, into the interior of the Roman province of Dalmatia.
The Crkvina archaeological site in Bogdašići, associated with Šujica, contains the remains of an early Christian basilica and is also associated with the remains of an Illyrian settlement. The site contains stone decorative columns from the church featuring floral motifs.
Events
The Šujički Half Marathon runs from Kupres to Šujica. It is described as the oldest half marathon in Bosnia and Herzegovina; its first edition took place in 2007.
