Hotels in Ilijaš: Bijambare and Cultural Monuments
Bijambare combines a distinctive karst landscape with caves, sinkholes and karst shafts. It also features historic sites, necropolises with stećci, and an events calendar ranging from film screenings to folklore, sports and educational programs. Ilijaš thus presents natural and cultural sites whose specific characteristics can be clearly distinguished from one another.
Nature and Trails
Bijambare is a karst landscape with karst caves, sinkholes and karst shafts. The central Bijambare Cave has been prepared for visitors, illuminated and opened to the public. Its tour follows a paved path through four chambers. In addition, Bijambare has cycling, educational and forest trails. The various types of trails stand alongside one another, just as the underground and above-ground forms of the karst landscape do.
Culture and History
The necropolis with stećci in Kopošići is a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It comprises more than 30 stećci. A pilot cultural route connects the necropolis of Kopošići with the old Bosnian town of Dubrovnik. The historic site of Stari grad Dubrovnik in Višnjica is a national monument in the municipality of Ilijaš. From the north, a gravel road leads almost to the walls of the old town; Stari grad Dubrovnik can also be reached from three sides: from the west, south and southeast.
Near Bijambare lies the Mramorje necropolis, with 39 stećci dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. Another Mramorje necropolis lies near Drveni grad and is presented as an attraction for visitors to Bijambare. The local cultural history also includes the “Kulturno naslijeđe Ilijaša” exhibition, which should be accessible to visitors throughout the year.
Transport and Historic Routes
Both road and railway connections run through the Ilijaš area. Several of the described access routes converge at the old town of Dubrovnik: the gravel road approaches almost to the walls from the north, while the town can be reached from the west, south and southeast.
