Foča between rivers, mountains and Sutjeska National Park

The Perućica primeval forest is a protected area of around 1,230 hectares within Sutjeska National Park. The Skakavac waterfall, which is 75 metres high, is located in this primeval forest. The protected forest and the waterfall area are therefore among the prominent natural features around Foča, without equating the two features with each other.

The municipality of Foča includes high mountain ranges of the Dinaric Alps, including Maglić, Zelengora, Vučevo, Volujak, Bioč and Ljubišnja. These mountain ranges are considered a challenge for hikers and mountaineers. The landscape is complemented by 17 rivers and streams with gorges, clear water and fast currents.

There are seven glacial lakes on Zelengora. Because of their exceptional beauty and glacial origin, they are known as “mountain eyes”. Another special natural feature is the earth pyramids in Pirni Do, at the ninth kilometre of the old road towards Miljevina and Sarajevo. The natural process by which these earth pyramids form is still continuing today.

The municipality of Foča is known for rafting on the Tara and Drina rivers. The rivers in the Foča area also offer opportunities for rafting, canyoning and kayaking. Fishing is practised in the Drina, Tara, Piva, Ćehotina, Sutjeska and Bistrica rivers within the municipality.

A canyoning tour through the Hrčavka Canyon in Sutjeska National Park is 13 kilometres long, takes five to six hours and is considered moderately difficult. The specific duration and classification are just as much part of the character of this tour as its route through the canyon.

Bicycles can be rented at the tourist information centre in Sutjeska National Park. Paved paths with a total length of 48 kilometres lead through the natural surroundings and can be cycled. In the Zelengora area, the Zelengora mountaineering association organises one-day mountain tours and excursions with professional guides and experienced mountaineers.

The medieval burial site of Mramor in Vrbica near Foča is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Stećci – Medieval Tombstone Graveyards” and bears the designation 1504-018. In the centre of Foča, on the right bank of the Ćehotina River, stands the Church of Saint Sava. It covers 1,500 square metres.

A museum in Foča was founded in 1956. It presents exhibitions on the ethnographic collection and the history of Foča, the National Liberation Struggle and Dr Risto Jeremic. The museum also includes a memorial room for fallen soldiers of the Army of Republika Srpska.

Specialities in the Foča area include veal roasted under a bell and lamb cooked in milk. The bell is a traditional metal lid under which the food is prepared.

The central part of Sutjeska National Park is approximately 20 kilometres from Foča. It can be reached via the Belgrade–Višegrad–Foča–Tjentište–Trebinje–Dubrovnik main road.
