Discover Srebrenica: Nature, History and Hotels

Guber is an excursion area and promenade at an altitude of 560 metres near Srebrenica. The 2.5-kilometre Guber promenade leads through unspoiled coniferous and deciduous forests; several mineral springs are located along the route. The Banja Guber area was declared a climatic spa resort by a decision of the Government of Republika Srpska dated 23 May 2024. There is also a cave near Guber that is believed to have served in antiquity as a Roman smelting furnace for ore processing.

The historical traces range from the Roman era to the Middle Ages and modern times. Between the 1st and 4th centuries, the Roman settlement Municipium Malvesiatium existed there, an important administrative and cultural centre of this part of the Roman province. In the 15th century, alongside mining and trade, Srebrenica was an important centre of various crafts; its presence there is documented for 15 of the 34 crafts known in Bosnia.

The old town of Srebrenica was built near the present-day town centre after the arrival of the Turkish administration. Traces of a church and a monastery are visible in Klisa in Srebrenica. The Church of St Mary is considered to be a rectangular hall with a rectangular sanctuary. The archaeological site in Skelani preserves Roman floor mosaics. Another historical site is the old town of Klotjevac, a medieval Bosnian fortress on a hill near the Drina that offers a view of the Drina Canyon.

The Srebrenica Memorial Center is open to visitors from 08:00 to 16:00, subject to special circumstances. Visitors to the Srebrenica Memorial Center are asked to reserve facilities and may request a guided tour with a curator. The Memorial Center presents the permanent exhibitions “Memorial Room – Personal Stories” and “Failure of the International Community”. The “Memento” exhibition combines photography and oral history and presents historical artefacts from genocide survivors and the relatives of victims.

The Srebrenica Cultural Center brings together museums, permanent painting exhibitions and the town library. The permanent exhibitions showcase the way of life of the population and the ethnology of the area from prehistoric times onwards. The permanent painting exhibition in the gallery of the Cultural Center originated from the First International Artists’ Colony “Srebrenica 2006”.

The “Tvrđava” cycling route is 3 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 165 metres and runs over asphalt and dirt. A viewpoint on the “Tvrđava” route offers a view of Srebrenica and the narrow green valley in which the town lies. The route passes the Catholic Church of St Mary from the 13th century and the Klisa necropolis.

The events calendar also includes fixed dates and a range of cultural focuses. The “Dani Srebrenice” event is a traditional cultural, artistic, sports and tourism event held every year from the end of May to the beginning of June. It includes concerts, exhibitions, theatre performances, book presentations and sports tournaments. The Pančićeva Regatta is an annual boating event on Lake Perućac associated with Srebrenica. During the Pančićeva Regatta, the boats travel upstream on Lake Perućac.
