Kyustendil: Hotels and Accommodation
Kyustendil lies at the southern end of the basin of the same name, at the foot of the Osogovo Mountains, at an elevation of 560 metres. Regular bus and train connections link the city with other places in Bulgaria.
Culture and History
Hisarlaka Fortress was included in the National Architectural and Archaeological Reserve “Pautalia–Velbazhd–Kyustendil” in 1977; extensive restoration and conservation work was carried out in 2014. The collections of the Regional Museum of History comprise more than 118,000 objects from all historical periods. The medieval Church of St. George can be accessed via an interactive virtual tour.
The Vladimir Dimitrov–Maystora Art Gallery is described as Bulgaria’s largest and most important collection of the artist’s works; around 100 works are displayed in its permanent exhibition. The St. George Museum Complex includes a preserved church dating from the 11th to 12th century with five layers of frescoes, the oldest of which dates from the time of its construction.
Nature and Trails
An easy tourist walking route in the city centre is listed as taking approximately two to three hours and covering about two kilometres. It is suitable for independent travellers, families, school groups and organised excursions.
Ezerata Eco Park comprises two artificial lakes connected by a tunnel bridge; it also has a footpath, green spaces and rest areas. A 21-kilometre paved road connects Kyustendil with the main tourist sites and bases in the Osogovo Mountains.
Tsarna Reka Reserve is the only protected area in the Osogovo Mountains. It was established to preserve characteristic forest ecosystems.
Regional Cuisine
The cherries, apples and plums from Kyustendil are described as fruits with excellent flavour and an environmentally clean origin. Kyustendil zelnik is a banitsa-like pastry: one sheet of dough encloses the remaining sheets, and the filling is placed in the centre.
