Georgi Damyanovo – Forests, Churches and Monastic Culture

The two forest reserves are easy to distinguish by their features. The “Kopren, Ravno Buche, Dayanitsa, Kalimanitsa” reserve covers 536.4 hectares of forest in the Kopilovtsi area. “Usketo” lies in the Dalgi del area of the West Balkan at an altitude of 1,550 meters and includes a natural, centuries-old spruce forest. Kopilovtsi is therefore notable for its designated forest area, while Usketo stands out for its elevation and old spruce forest.

Another natural feature is the “West Balkan” Natura 2000 protected area (BG0002002), which lies within the municipality. Under Directive 79/409, it protects wild birds. The protected areas thus complement the forest landscape with a specific focus on bird conservation.

Two churches offer specific points of reference for local architectural history. The “St. George The Victorious” Church in the village of Gavril Genovo was built in 1872. The “St. Apostles Peter and Paul” Church in Dalgi del dates from 1882 and is a unique stone building. Their dates and construction methods make for a clear comparison, without requiring any specialist architectural knowledge.

The Lopushanski Monastery “St. John the Baptist,” a national cultural monument, is located in the village of Georgi Damyanovo. Its church is the third-largest monastery church in Bulgaria. The “Georgi Damyanov” house museum is also located in the center of the village of Georgi Damyanovo. It presents various stages in Georgi Damyanov’s life and career.

Traditional customs are also part of the local culture: in Kopilovtsi, Govezhda and Georgi Damyanovo, Jordanovden and Ivanovden are associated with bathing for health. These festive and ritual practices offer a different cultural connection from the churches and museum.

“Mladenin vir” in the village of Dalgi del is a picnic spot with a natural spring and a constructed well. In Kamenna Riksa, “Bear Hole” Cave is listed as a natural attraction, and in Elovitsa, so is “Razhena bara” Waterfall.
