Montana: Hotels and accommodations

Montana combines cultural history with its location on the Ogosta River. The Ogosta Reservoir lies south of Montana. The city is also a destination for travelers who would like to book a hotel in Montana.

Culture and history

The Regional History Museum of Montana preserves more than 60,000 movable cultural objects. The collections range from the Copper Age to the early 21st century; the exhibitions are presented in three main buildings. The museum also offers guided tours of the ancient and medieval Kaleto Fortress.

The ancient fortress of Montana stands on the Kaleto or Gradishte hill on the southwestern edge of the city, approximately 40 meters above the urban area. Archaeological excavations have uncovered a gate with a tower there, representing a fortress structure from the 3rd to 4th centuries. Below the fortress, at a large spring, lies an ancient rock sanctuary that was associated with Diana and Apollo during Roman times.

Montana's municipal cultural offerings also include an International Folklore Festival.

Landscape and water

Montana lies on the Ogosta River in a foothill basin north of the Balkan Mountains, bordered by the Păstrina and Montansko Bardo uplands. From Kaleto Hill, views extend across Montana and the Ogosta Reservoir.

The Ogosta Reservoir south of Montana is associated with recreation, sports, water tourism, and fishing. There are recreational facilities and restaurants in the area. Regular bus services are also reported for the Ogosta Reservoir area.

Walks and excursions

The route around Lake Montanenzium is described as one of the easiest walks in Montana. An easy walk from the center of Montana to Kaleto is also described as a route with views.

Lopushanski Monastery is located 22 kilometers west of Montana and offers a hotel-restaurant on site as well as nearby forest paths.

Geographical location

In the wider regional area, the Unknown Northwest route is 1,255 kilometers long and is described as a journey that takes approximately four hours by car or organized transport.
