An approximately 11-kilometre-long eco-trail leads from Chakalarovo to Veykata Peak.
Natural Area
The Gyumurdzhinsky Snowfield protected area covers 1,926.4 hectares and also includes the land around Chakalarovo. It extends to the Bulgarian-Greek border.
Nature
A protected holly (Ilex aquifolium) can be found in Chakalarovo as a natural monument. The rare evergreen shrub or small tree is listed in Bulgaria's Red Data Book. The specimen is approximately 7 metres tall and is located about 1 km from the village centre, on the path towards Veikata Peak.
There is also a protected field elm in the schoolyard of Chakalarovo, estimated to be about 300 years old. Its trunk circumference is 4.2 metres and its height is approximately 25 metres. A route towards Veikata Peak can include the tree.
Trails
Veykata Peak reaches an elevation of 1,463 metres and is the southernmost point of Bulgaria. The route from Chakalarovo starts on an unpaved road near the village bridge. It takes approximately 1.5 hours to reach a former border post; from there, the trail continues for about another two hours to the summit.
In clear conditions, the view from Veykata Peak extends across Greece and the Aegean Sea.
Culture and Food
The Chakalarovo Corn Festival traditionally offers visitors boiled corn. The programme of the “Chakalarovo Corn Festival” also included a re-enactment of an old traditional wedding.
