Overview
Bankja is a resort associated with relaxation and balneotherapy, located at the foot of the Lyulin Mountains at an average elevation of around 700 metres. The spring system comprised approximately 15 springs and extended over an area of about 200 square metres. The mineral water is homothermal at 36°C, has a pH value of 9.6, and a total mineralisation of 0.28 g/l.
History
Archaeological excavations in the Verdikal district uncovered Roman buildings, walls, drainage systems, and bronze jewellery. The traditional Goreshlyatsi celebrations take place on 15, 16, and 17 July. The Great Bath was completed in 1910 to a design by Munich architect Karl Hocheder and is described as one of Bankja’s best-known symbols.
The Church of the Martyrs Kirik and Julita was built in 1932. The Vazov Oak was a favourite resting place of the writer Ivan Vazov. The Klisura Monastery of Saint Petka is located about 7 kilometres from the centre of Bankja, was founded in the 13th century, and is an active convent.
Things to Do
The Holy Trinity pilgrimage route runs from the Church of the Martyrs Kirik and Julita in Bankja to the Holy Trinity Divotino Monastery. It is about 8 kilometres long, takes approximately two hours, and most of the route follows eco-trails around Bankja.
Thermal Area
The fully restored Royal Bath building is a cultural monument. The Great Spa was inaugurated on 24 May 1911.
The Royal Bath’s thermal area includes mineral-water showers and hydromassage showers, as well as a relaxation area with heated stone loungers. The wellness area includes steam, aroma steam, Finnish, and herbal saunas, a laconium, and a tepidarium. It also includes two hydromassage pools with mineral water heated to 32°C.
