Botevgrad: Hotels and accommodations

The clock tower from the period of the Bulgarian National Revival was built in 1866. At 30 meters tall, it is described as the highest clock tower from this era in Bulgaria. In 2007, it was declared a cultural monument of national importance; it is also included in the list of Bulgaria’s 100 national tourist sites. Culture

The Historical Museum of Botevgrad is located in the city center on Saransk Square, in a reconstructed former courthouse. Its first collection was established and opened on May 24, 1937. Behind the museum building is the Lectorium outdoor art area, which is used for educational and charitable events.

Bozhenishki Urvich Fortress can be reached via an asphalt road and then along a marked trail; the subsequent walk takes about 20 minutes. In Skravena, the memorial ossuary of the Botev rebels preserves the skulls of ten rebels from the group of Georgi Apostolov. The annual commemorative events on June 2 include historical readings, artistic programs, exhibitions, competitions, a memorial ceremony, a wreath procession, and a ceremonial fireworks display.

Barrel-making is described as the most characteristic craft of Vrachesh and has a long history.

Nature

The Muhalnitsa protected area is located within the city limits of Botevgrad, in the Zelin villa area, and protects a marsh and adjacent areas. The Rudinata protected area in the Botevgrad area protects old beech forests. The well-maintained School Forest reserve in Bozhenitsa protects natural oak forests.

Muhalnitsa in Botevgrad’s Zelin villa area is known worldwide for the unique migration of the common frog (Rana temporaria). At the end of winter and the beginning of spring, common frogs reach Muhalnitsa after a seven-kilometer migration and spawn there.

Things to do

The Zelin villa area has a 1.8-kilometer downhill cycling track with more than 200 meters of descent and challenging elements designed for extreme downhill riding.

The approximately six-kilometer Bozhenitsa–Svode route has an elevation difference of 70 meters and is described as suitable for a day hike and a family picnic. The Bebresh River, which runs along the route, is described as suitable for fishing. Near the route, two lower rock faces have been equipped for climbing; they are described as suitable for beginners with professional equipment.
