Culture and History
The Historical Museum of Etropole is housed in a konak built between 1853 and 1870, which is recognized as an architectural cultural monument. Its collection is distributed across ten exhibition halls and comprises more than 1,200 cultural objects, photographs, and documents.
The Monastery of the Holy Trinity, located near Etropole, served as a scriptorium in the 16th and 17th centuries and developed a literary and calligraphic school. At the monastery, the priest gives a talk in Bulgarian.
The two-story Arnaudova House, dating from the mid-19th century, originates from the National Revival period and houses a museum exhibition on domestic life featuring furniture, household objects, textiles, and traditional crafts. The Etropole Clock Tower, built in 1710 by the master craftsman Todor, is referred to as a symbol of the city. The Pavelpanchova House served as General Gurko's headquarters in 1877.
Traditional crafts preserved in the Municipality of Etropole include wagon making, blacksmithing, knife sharpening, woodcarving, weaving, farriery, leatherworking, and grain milling. In the area around Etropole, the remains of a Thracian settlement near Bogotvor are dated to the 5th to 4th century BC.
Nature and Trails
In the area around Etropole, the Varovitets Waterfall is surrounded by plants and trees. Chertigrad is described as a natural monument in the area around Etropole; it consists of a rock complex with forest vegetation inhabited by rare and endangered mammals as well as birds of prey.
The Waterfalls Trail is an easy hiking trail suitable for children and leads to the Monastery of the Holy Trinity, the Varovitets Waterfall, Suha Raven, and the Vranyata Voda Waterfall. A hike along a marked trail from Etropole to the Monastery of the Holy Trinity and the Varovitets Waterfall takes about one and a half hours. From Varovitets, marked trails allow for an easy walk to the Vranyata Voda Waterfall in the village of Yamna and to the ancient settlement of St. Athanasius.
The St. Athanasius Tradition Trail is an easy route suitable for children over eight years of age and leads to the locality of St. Athanasius. The Belezhkata–Lishavia Kamak Trail is also easy and suitable for children over eight years of age; it includes the Belezhkata Spring, the Tabashki Bridge, and the Thracian fortress of Lishavia Kamak.
The village of Yamna is the most convenient starting point for the trail to Chertigrad. Chertigrad is about 3 km away; the marked trail leading there is called “Following in Benkovski's footsteps,” and the hike takes about two hours.
