Samokov: Hotels and Accommodation

Culture and History

Samokov is associated with an important Bulgarian art school from the period of the National Revival. Its painters, icon painters, engravers, and woodcarvers created works for churches and monasteries. Goldsmithing and clockmaking were also part of the city’s craft heritage.

Samokov developed around large mechanical hammers, known as samokovi, which were used for iron production. Ironworking and livestock farming supported a diverse craft tradition that included more than 300 wheels for producing braided bands and 40 aba workshops.

The Belyova Church is the oldest Christian church within Samokov and stands on the foundations of a late antique basilica dating from the 4th to the 6th century. Its wall paintings and icons were created by Nikola Obrazopisov and his collaborators, while the iconostasis was made by Samokov woodcarvers.

The “Shroud of Holy Mary” Convent was founded in 1772 by Fota of Samokov, who donated her own house to the convent. The convent church was built between 1837 and 1839. In the 19th century, the convent developed extensive educational activities. The church contains icons attributed to Dimitar Zograf; a wall painting in the porch is considered to be the work of Zahari Zograf.

The Historical Museum in Samokov was founded in 1936 through the work of local artists. It hosts temporary exhibitions and other specialist events.

Samokov has a mountain bike park. The town also has a multifunctional sports hall with facilities for 25 sports.

The Municipality of Samokov publishes timetables for bus services between villages and between towns, as well as for two municipal bus routes.
