Culture and History
Gorna Beshovitsa is the birthplace of the sculptor Ivan Funev. The church in Gorna Beshovitsa features original stone reliefs that adorn its stone façade. The archaeological heritage in and around the village includes the remains of a Neolithic settlement and a Late Antique tomb with a gravestone bearing a Greek inscription dating to the 3rd century.
The Church of Saint Dimitar is designated as a cultural monument of national importance and was consecrated in 1864. It stands near a Roman-era necropolis, as well as one from the first centuries of Christianity, which have not yet been excavated or studied. Dimitar pop Nedelkov opened the village’s first cell school.
Gorna Beshovitsa is also associated with the recording “Snoshti mi e gaste doshlo.” An open-air art event organized by the Mezdra City Art Gallery took place in Gorna Beshovitsa.
Landscape and Nature
Gorna Beshovitsa lies in hilly terrain and in a scenic valley. The Kosmatitsa stream runs alongside the settlement; the territory of Gorna Beshovitsa also contains a reservoir covering 57.512 decares.
The village lies partly within the protected habitat zone BG0001014 “Karlukovo” and partly within the BG0000332 “Karlukovski Karst” Special Protection Area. The wider area of the BG0001014 “Karlukovo” protected site provides habitats for the European wolf, the Eurasian otter, and several horseshoe bat species.
