History
In the area of Donje Pazarište, a Pauline monastery with the Church of St. Mary in Gračina is recorded for 1411. The present-day parish church of the Apostle James was later referred to in local tradition as “kloštar”; its construction before 1700 is reported. Another historical account describes it as having been built around 1839 on the foundations of a 15th-century Pauline monastery. For 1896, it is reported that parishioners in Donje Pazarište called the church “kloštar”. It is classified as an individual immovable cultural asset in Donje Pazarište. In the wider regional surroundings of Donje Pazarište, there is also the Slana concentration camp.
Regional Products
Donje Pazarište is home to Pivovara Ličanka. Its range includes Velebitsko in light, dark and special varieties, as well as Kasačko beers. Ličanka’s products are made without preservatives or additives. The Kolačević family business in Donje Pazarište produces semi-hard cow’s milk cheese, cow’s-milk škripavac, curd cheese, Basa and yoghurt.
Landscape
The cave known as Ričina lies in the immediate vicinity of Donje Pazarište; its location is only approximate. Krčmar, Torine and Crnaj, which are named as mountains, are also located in this immediate vicinity.
Routes and Surroundings
The official stage description of the Štirovača cycling route passes through Pazarište between Aleksinica and Štirovača. The Pazarište–Štirovača MTB route starts in the village of Pazarište. In the immediate vicinity of Donje Pazarište, Ostrovica is checkpoint 13 on the Lički gorski biseri hiking circuit. The Ostrovica route passes a viewpoint before reaching the remains of a former fortress. An Indian village is also designated as a point of interest near Pazarište.
