Culture and history

Fortica was built in 1619 to protect Otočac. From its foot, fifteen Stations of the Cross lead to a chapel near the summit.

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Otočac is a single-nave late Baroque and Neoclassical building with a rectangular floor plan. It is a protected cultural asset of the Republic of Croatia.

Access to the permanent exhibition of the Gacka Museum is currently temporarily unavailable during a renovation lasting several years. Temporary exhibitions and other museum activities remain available in the building. The permanent exhibition is divided into six sections containing objects from six museum collections. The archaeological department displays around 300 artefacts dating from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages.

River and trails

Near Otočac, the Gacka flows into the Karlov kanal before joining the Lika River. It is a slow-flowing karst river with abundant aquatic flora and fauna.

The riverside path along the Gacka in Otočac extends for several kilometres and includes views of the stone bridge connecting the lower and upper parts of the town.

The Jurjeve stijene cycling route starts at Kralja Zvonimira 34 in Otočac and is 42.4 kilometres long.

Getting there and surroundings

The Gacka/Otočac area can be reached by road from Senj and the Littoral via Vratnik, from Ogulin and Gorski Kotar via the Velika–Mala Kapela passes, from Plitvice and Krbava via Homoljački klanac, and from Gospić and Lika via Janjča.

Nearby, the Croatian Centre for Native Fish and Crayfish Species in Karst Waters offers group or individual visits lasting approximately one hour.
