History and Nature

Plitvice Lakes National Park has been Croatia’s first national park since 1949 and has held UNESCO World Heritage status since 1979. This recognition relates to the ongoing process of tufa barrier formation through which its lakes are created. Plitvice Lakes National Park consists of 16 lakes in total, connected by waterfalls. A distinctive landscape feature is the Čorkova Uvala primeval forest: it covers 84 hectares of beech and fir forest at elevations ranging from 860 to 1,028 metres. Špilja Šupljara is a geomorphological natural monument and the only cave in the park open to visitors. It consists of three chambers connected by a spacious corridor and is 68 metres long. Tomićevo pogledalo is a viewpoint located at 684.82 metres above sea level, offering panoramic views over five lakes in Plitvice Lakes National Park.

Turčić is located near Plitvice Lakes. Velika Pećina, Široki Rt and Rasovački Ogradak are in the surrounding area. In the wider regional surroundings of Plitvice Lakes are Radetina Kula, Sveta Petka, Sveti Petka and Sveti Nikola.

History

The Carska visitors’ house at Velika Poljana above Kozjak is associated with the year 1861 as the beginning of tourism at the Plitvice Lakes.

Trails and Programs

The Medveđak ridge offers hiking trails through old beech forest, educational panels and panoramic views over parts of the Plitvice Lakes and the surrounding mountain and valley landscape. Visitor Program A is 3,500 metres long and takes 2 to 3 hours. Tomićevo pogledalo can be reached on foot; the ascent takes about 20 minutes.

The Poučno–rekreativna staza Plitvica trail runs from Labudovac to Veliki slap and the P3 boat landing in Kozjačka draga.

Winter

The Mukinje ski area is located in the settlement of Mukinje, about 2.5 kilometres from Park Entrance 2. Mukinje has a drag lift with a capacity of 400 skiers per hour, as well as slopes approximately 400 metres long and a toboggan run.
