Plitvička Jezera Municipality at a glance

Plitvice Lakes National Park was declared Croatia’s first national park on 8 April 1949. On 26 October 1979, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List because of the outstanding universal value of its tufa formation process. The park lies at the heart of the Municipality of Plitvička Jezera. Its forests are home to bears, wolves and many rare bird species.

The national park is open 365 days a year; public opening hours vary by season. When planning your day, it is therefore important to distinguish between the park being open year-round and visitor hours varying seasonally.

Which trails and routes are right for your visit?

The Čorkova Bay Trail is 21 kilometres long. This distance helps you plan for the trail as a longer option. Čorkova Uvala is a separate destination: organised visitor groups can only get there using transport arranged by the park, and must be accompanied by a ranger.

The Oko Mrsinja cycling trail also offers a unique perspective on the area. It runs mostly in the surroundings of the national park and partly within the park. If you would rather explore the lake area on foot with a guide, you can join a guided walk that passes through a large part of the area and includes, among other places, the Tomićevo Pogledalo viewpoint.

The routes described differ in their itineraries. A route through the Lower Lakes includes a ride across Lake Kozjak by electric boat and a ride in a panoramic vehicle. A route through the Upper Lakes area includes a short boat ride across Lake Kozjak, a walk to Lake Prošćansko, and the return journey on a sightseeing train. When planning, you can therefore consider which part of the lake area and which ways of getting around interest you.

What boat and transport options are available?

The Plitvice Train provides transport for visitors within the park. It runs along the 6.5-kilometre Rapajinka–Velika Poljana–Labudovac route. The national park also has eight electric boats. The longer boat ride across Lake Kozjak takes 20 minutes; a ride in an electric boat is part of the described itinerary through the Lower Lakes.

If you would like to row yourself, you can rent wooden rowboats at Kupalište (P1) on Lake Kozjak. Rowing is only permitted on Lake Kozjak. Keep this restriction in mind when choosing between an electric boat ride and a rowing activity.

What other experiences and places are there?

The park offers themed tours on geology, biology, forestry, the lakes and other topics. The themes are arranged in consultation with park experts. This allows you to tailor your visit to different interests, such as the landscape or the nature of the area.

The National Restaurant Lička kuća is part of the regional food scene. It serves traditional dishes in the atmosphere of a traditional house from the Lika region.
