Alan: Hotels and Accommodation

Alan and its immediate surroundings encompass extensive mountain pastures, dolines and plateaus beneath scenic peaks. Veliki Alan is a significant Velebit pass at 1,414 metres; the Velebit road crossing the pass connects Lika with the sea. From Alan, there are views of the sea and the islands. Nature

Alančić is a grassy peak with views across large parts of the northern and central Velebit and towards the sea.

Trails

Alan is a starting point for hiking tours on the Velebit. A ridge trail from the Planinarska kuća Alan leads to the 1,451-metre-high Buljma peak. The ascent to Zečjak begins in Alan on the road towards Štirovača, then follows the Premužićeva staza and subsequently climbs to the summit. Zečjak is the second-highest peak of the central Velebit.

The Alančić peak, at 1,612 metres, is approximately one hour north of the Planinarska kuća Alan via the Premužićeva staza. From Alan, Veliki Lubenovac can be reached by following the Premužićeva staza northwards and changing to a mountain path at the junction near Krajačev kuk.

The tour to Buljma offers views of the sea and the Mirovo valley. It takes approximately 1.5 hours on foot and has no major climbs. The Veliki Golić–Goljak circular trail runs mainly through grassland and has no difficult climbs.

Routes

Alan can be reached via a paved road from Jablanac or via a gravel road from Begovača. Near Alan, Štirovača can be reached via a 9-kilometre gravel road to Mrkvište, followed by a 3.5-kilometre paved road into the valley.

The Alan–Štirovača cycling route is listed as 11.9 kilometres long, of medium difficulty, with a stated travel time of 1 to 1.25 hours. The Alan–Mrkvište–Štirovača cycle path runs eastwards from the Planinarska kuća Alan, shares its route with Trail E for 2 kilometres, and descends 3 kilometres from Mrkvište to Štirovača.

Trail E Oltari–Zavižan–Lom–Lubenovac–Alan reaches Alan via a gravel road through Lubenovac after passing Zavižan and Mali Lom.

Culture

The Premužićeva staza has been officially protected as a cultural asset of national importance since 2009. Near Alan, Mirovo preserves the remains of stone houses, barns, dry-stone walls and cisterns. Mirovo was formerly a summer mountain settlement and is now a Velebit grassland with visible dry-stone walls and old summer houses.

Orientation

At the “Planinska igraonica” educational and interpretation centre in Alan, visitors can learn about the species and habitats of Northern Velebit National Park as well as traditional pastoral farming. The Planinarska kuća Alan is described as being continuously open from the end of May to the end of October; outside this season, it is usually open on Sundays.
