Kolocep: Hotels and Accommodation

Koločep is an island with around 17 cultural monuments, mainly small churches and chapels dating from periods up to the 16th century. The Kaštio fortress stands above the port of Donje Čelo. Those wishing to book a hotel in Kolocep can continue their accommodation search afterwards.

Culture

The parish church of St. Mary dates from the 13th to the 15th century and contains sculptures from the 14th and 16th centuries. The medieval church of St. Anthony the Abbot preserves a polyptych by Ivan Ugrinović from 1434. The pre-Romanesque church of St. Anthony of Padua stands halfway up the slope of Gornje Čelo and dates from the 11th to the 12th century. The Church of the Holy Trinity is one of the historic churches listed for Koločep.

A parish collection next to the Church of the Assumption of Mary in Donje Čelo displays a reconstructed altar screen from the 11th century from St. Michael's Church, a 15th-century polyptych, and material on seven researched churches and archaeological sites on Koločep. Donje Čelo also preserves the remains of defensive towers that were built after the island was ravaged by the Turks in the 16th century.

Many buildings on Koločep date from the 15th and 16th centuries and feature finely hewn masonry and architectural details. Residential buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries include associated agricultural buildings such as small mills. The inhabitants of Koločep were known for coral harvesting from the 14th to the 18th century.

Paths and Nature

A footpath through the island's interior connects Donje Čelo and Gornje Čelo. Koločep has an extensive network of footpaths; there is no motor traffic anywhere on the island.

Mediterranean agriculture on Koločep includes olives, grapevines, figs, carob, and citrus fruits.

Coast and Getting There

Koločep offers secluded beaches that are suitable for a peaceful seaside holiday. A public passenger service connects the port of Gruž in Dubrovnik with the port of Gornje Čelo on Koločep in both directions.
