Cavtat: Hotels and Accommodation

Cavtat is located on the Rat Peninsula around a sheltered, accessible bay; the settlement also includes the Sustjepan Peninsula. The ancient settlement was the Roman colony of Epidaurus and was also historically known as Ragusa Vecchia. During the Republic of Dubrovnik, Cavtat was the republic’s second-most important seaport after Dubrovnik, as well as a place of trade and administration.

Culture and History

At Kuća Bukovac, which opened to the public in 2004, the permanent exhibition presents works from all periods of Vlaho Bukovac’s creative career.

At the Baltazar Bogišić Collection, visitors can see the permanent exhibition “Raznolikosti Bogišićeve ostavštine”. The collection comprises more than 28,000 museum and library objects, as well as Bogišić’s personal archive.

The Franciscan Church of Gospe od Snijega in Cavtat has an interior featuring sculptures, paintings, metalwork and textiles. The parish church of St Nicholas was built in the 15th century.

The Račić Family Mausoleum in Cavtat was Ivan Meštrović’s first completed work and combines architecture with sculpture. At the 1925 Paris Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts, it received the Grand Prix.

Water and Trails

Diving is possible around Cavtat and the nearby islands of Mrkan, Bobara and Supetar; these areas feature ancient sites, underwater walls, caves and shipwrecks.

A unique shell collection in Cavtat offers visitors a half-hour guided tour with more than 2,500 specimens from seas and oceans around the world.

Hiking

The Cavtat–Močići–Čilipi hiking trail is 8 kilometres long. It starts at the Church of St George (Đurđa) in Mečajac and has turn-offs to bathing spots along the Konavle cliffs. Most of the route runs at approximately the same elevation, and the trail is suitable for recreational hikers.

Cycling

The Cavtat–Močići–Čilipi cycling route is 9.5 kilometres long and starts at the Cavtat bus station. It combines asphalt and gravel surfaces and is suitable for trekking and mountain bikes. The Cavtat–Zvekovica–Miljasi route also starts at the Cavtat bus station and is designed as a 26-kilometre circular route.

Getting There

Dubrovnik Airport is located in Čilipi, just 5 kilometres from Cavtat; a taxi service is available for local transfers to Cavtat. Bus route 10 connects Dubrovnik and Cavtat and runs every 30 minutes according to the timetable.
