Culture and History

The name Kaldanija derives from the noble Petronio Caldana family, which owned the area from the 16th to the 19th century. The former Parenzana stop in Kaldanija had only a station name sign and a lamp post; today, no traces of the stop are visible.

Geographical Location

Kaldanija is located on the state road between Buje and the Plovanija border crossing, 1 km south of the Savudrija–Kaštel junction.

Getting Around

The official Route 3, “Medieval Towns and Wine Roads of Momjan,” is a 38.8 km moderately difficult asphalt loop route with an approximate duration of 4 to 4.5 hours. At 5.1 km, Route 3 turns onto a side road towards Kaldanija.

The Parenzana mountain-biking route reaches Kaldanija and continues via Volpija to Buje. Sections of the Parenzana can be explored on foot and provide access to remarkable tunnels and viaducts.

After Kaldanija, the Istarski planinarski put continues over country lanes and through vineyards to Volpija. After crossing the main road, Route 3 reaches Volpija at 9.4 km; the route description warns of traffic there.

Towards the state border, the Parenzana passes through Volpija, Kaldanija, Specijarija, Markovac, and Valica before continuing through forests and valleys towards Savudrija.
