Culture
The Church of St. Martin in Sveti Martin was built in 1602 on the foundations of an older church. When this older church began to collapse towards the end of the 19th century, a new Church of St. Martin was built in 1888, largely from material salvaged from the demolished predecessor. It was also consecrated in 1888. Inside there is a stone altar with a painting of Saint Martin and two angels. The façade features a bell gable with two bells.
Local Traditions
Martinje in Sveti Martin marks the traditional transformation of fermented must into young wine. As a local celebration, Martinje combines the ceremonial baptism of the new wine with visits to village konobas, young-wine tasting, music and traditional food-related activities. The festivities also included the traditional preparation of salted cod.
The Martinje procession traditionally visits around fifteen village konobas and ends at the tavern of Brombejevi at the upper end of the settlement. During the procession, guests are served pršut, Istrian fritule and bakalar. A Martinje weekend in Sveti Martin also included a wine evaluation in the village, in which visitors also awarded a tasting prize. The Martinje festival also included a demonstration of traditional rakija production in improvised stills at a tavern.
Cycling
Official cycling route 505, “The Trail of Rašpor Captains”, is a 52.3-kilometre circular route that begins and ends in Buzet. The route comprises 47.1 kilometres of macadam and 5.2 kilometres of asphalt.
From the edge of Sveti Martin, the route continues on a macadam climb towards Finderli. From Strana, the trail returns to Sveti Martin via a forest path before continuing into the centre of Buzet.
