Townscape
The old town preserves the Vela and Mala town gates from the 16th century. The Church of Saint George in Buzet has a portal dating from 1611. Four squares are connected by three main streets. The historic building stock also includes the Velika Cistern, a polygonal late Baroque structure dating from 1789.
Culture and History
The Zavičajni Museum Buzet displays archaeological, historical and ethnographic material related to traditional local crafts. Palace Bigatto in Buzet is an example of Mannerist and early Baroque architecture and houses the local museum. Fontik was built in 1534 and originally served as a grain store.
The Buzet earring is represented by 18 finds from the Mejica cemetery and two from Sovinjsko brdo. The type of Buzet earring is associated with early medieval indigenous and Romanised Illyrian-Celtic communities.
Hiking and Cycling
The section of the Buzet–Kotli–Hum hiking trail is 12 km long and takes about four hours at a leisurely pace. Part of the Buzet–Kotli–Hum–Buzet hiking trail runs along the Mirna River. A branch of this trail towards Selci leads to the Blizanci gorge; when water levels are low, the gorge can be traversed along the river.
The Staza tartufina cycling route is associated with the area’s truffle landscapes.
Events and Truffles
The traditional Istrian Truffle Festival is scheduled to take place in Buzet. At the scheduled festival, visitors can view a truffle exhibition, taste and buy truffles and truffle products, attend the “Buzet on a Plate” culinary showcase, and take part in the “Truffle Hunt” race, which combines MTB and trekking.
Every September, Subotina po starinski transforms the streets and squares of the old town into a historical stage. During Subotina po starinski, visitors can follow craft trails where traditional artisans demonstrate preserved skills.
