Landscape

Bijele Zemlje is located in hilly terrain that slopes down towards the Mirna Valley. Historically, the area was crossed by various routes, including a Roman imperial road.

Along the Mirna Gorge from Ponte Porton to Istrian Toplice, the terraced agricultural landscape is classified as a landscape of importance at both the national and county levels.

Trails and Routes

The official Istria Bike Trail 211 North-Northwest passes through Ponte Porton, which lies within the settlement of Bijele Zemlje. A moderately difficult cycling route, 31.3 kilometres long, runs from Buje via Krasica, Bijele Zemlje and Ponte Porton to the Mirna Valley. After the initial climb, the section through Bijele Zemlje is predominantly downhill towards the river. At kilometre 18.6, the route turns uphill towards Nova Vas and Brtonigla.

A published cycling route runs through Bijele Zemlje to the Mirna and then follows the river as far as kilometre 18.6. On the return journey to Buje, it follows the main Novigrad–Buje and Umag–Buje roads before leading to the centre of Buje via a side road.

Climbers spontaneously meet in the area of the planned Ponte Porton climbing site.

Culture and History

Sv. Ivan in Bijele Zemlje is designated as an archaeological site. The Church of St John the Baptist near Sv. Ivan is designated as a religious building; a children's playground is also recorded for Sv. Ivan.

The two-kilometre-long Ponte Porton–Baštija trail begins at a car park next to a restaurant in Ponte Porton and follows a road downstream along the right bank of the Mirna. After 1.5 kilometres, it reaches the single-nave Church of St Mary of Baštija. It was built in the 14th century and restored in 1610 and 2000. Historically, the church was an important meeting place for sailors and the residents of the surrounding settlements.

Baštija is described as the former port of Groznjan and as an important medieval and early modern site for loading and unloading goods.
