Culture and History

Historically, Grožnjan Castle housed the seats of the town mayors and captains of Pazin. The castle has undergone four documented restorations. The town walls of Grožnjan formed a unified defensive architectural complex.

The town loggia of Grožnjan dates from the late 16th century. It formerly served as the town courthouse and contains four Roman funerary slabs. Archaeological evidence in Grožnjan includes Roman remains and points to an earlier Neolithic settlement.

The Fonticus Town Gallery houses a heraldic collection focused on Istrian coats of arms, along with Croatian, German, and Slovenian examples. The parish church of Saints Vitus, Modestus, and Crescentia contains Girardi organs from 1846. Outside the walls of Grožnjan stands the Chapel of Saints Cosmas and Damian, dating from 1554.

Trails and Landscape

A local hiking trail begins at a car park outside Grožnjan and approaches the town walls. This route reaches the former railway line of the Parenzana. The Parenzana route near Grožnjan provides access toward the Kalcini Tunnel, which crosses the highest point of the route at 293 metres above sea level.

The Sacred Heritage Trails of Grožnjan form a circular hiking or cycling route within the municipality, following the municipality's settlements and churches. From a viewpoint at Grožnjan's former small gate, the view extends across around twenty villages in central Istria.

Regional Cuisine

Agrotourism in the Grožnjan area offers local specialities such as cheese, prosciutto, fuži, njoki, peka dishes, truffles, asparagus, and mushrooms.

Events

Jazz is Back! BP is a traditional festival held in Grožnjan during the second half of July. The programme includes the summer jazz school of Croatian Youth Music.

Ex tempore takes place annually in Grožnjan during the last week of September. During Ex tempore, all galleries in Grožnjan are open.
