Nature

Boljunsko Polje is classified as an area of landscape significance. The protected area HR2001215 Boljunsko polje is associated with six listed target species: Balkan barbel, Italian crested newt, yellow-bellied toad, lesser horseshoe bat, Bechstein's bat and primorska uklija. A maternity roost of this species is located in the area along the upper course of the Boljunčica and is described as the largest colony of its kind on the Istrian peninsula.

Things to do

The Vela Draga educational trail begins at the Zrinščak Tunnel and ends in Boljunsko Polje. It has a shorter, easier section leading to a viewpoint and a longer, more difficult section through the gorge. Nearby Vela Draga is protected as a nature reserve and a geomorphological natural monument.

The flying activity in Učka associated with the Vojak launch site and the Boljunsko Polje landing site is marked as accessible for people with disabilities.

Culture

The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel in Boljunsko Polje was built in 1670 on the site of a former Benedictine abbey. Its interior includes an ornately decorated wooden altar with a 1676 retable known as the „golden altar“.

Boljunsko Polje includes the hamlet of Opatija; the Church of Our Lady of Carmel is located there, and its main altar bears a statue of the Virgin Mary with the Child. The nearby Castle of Boljun has been preserved and is described as interesting to visit. The castle offers views across Boljunsko Polje and Učka.

Local

The Buretić agricultural business at Mandići 8, Boljunsko Polje, combines a livestock and dairy tradition spanning generations with the production of dairy products and organic cheese made from cow's milk.

Location

The Vranja–Šušnjevica road runs along the edge of Boljunsko Polje; roads branching off it lead towards Boljun and Paz.
