Višnjan: Hotels and Accommodations

Višnjan is home to the public Zvjezdarnica Višnjan Observatory, which focuses scientifically on asteroids, comets, and meteoroids. The Astro Night also combines several astronomical elements: in suitable weather conditions, visible celestial bodies can be observed with an amateur telescope in the meadow outside the observatory. The event concludes with a laser-assisted tour of the spring and summer constellations and also includes an astronomy lecture, as well as a tour of the observatory and the telescope dome.

Culture

The historic center can be explored on foot from Antun Korlević Park, past the 15th-century Gothic Church of St. Anthony and a gate with a Venetian lion from 1517, to the old marketplace. There you will find sections of walls from the 13th and 14th centuries, a 27-meter-high bell tower, an 18th-century loggia, a cistern, and the 19th-century Church of Saints Quiricus and Julietta. Antun Korlević Square in Višnjan is also home to the Sunčev tron sculpture and a sundial.

The Church of St. Anthony stands on the road from Višnjan to Poreč; it is a Gothic stone building with a bell gable. Inside are legends from the life of the saint and parts of a Christological cycle. The Church of St. Mary Magdalene is a Neo-Gothic chapel that was moved to its present location in 1884 from the former cemetery near Saline. A single tombstone from the former church is set into the stone staircase of the present chapel. The former Chapel of St. Rocco is also part of the town’s history: it stood on the town square until it was demolished in 1914; its church furnishings were transferred to a new Neo-Romanesque chapel in Saline, which was completed in 1923.

Nature and Trails

The 7.7-kilometer-long Sovina staza begins in the pine grove by the cemetery in Višnjan, leads along forest and gravel paths to Tićan, and then returns to Višnjan. Along the route are a former quarry, lavender plantations, and old oak trees. From the Vena viewpoint on the Sovina staza, the view extends across olive groves, vineyards, and the sea. The viewpoint in the old town also offers views over green fields and vineyards toward the sea in the direction of Poreč and Tar.

The Staza venecijanskog lava hiking route passes through historic Višnjan and the old village of Barat before returning to Višnjan. The Zvjezdana staza begins in the center of Višnjan and runs through the town, along forest paths, through vineyards, and through the surrounding villages to Tićan before leading back to Višnjan. It is described as a gentle route and characterized as suitable for families and vacationers seeking relaxation.

Wine and Regional Products
