Municipality of Višnjan: Observatory, Trails and Cultural Heritage

Višnjan lies in western Istria at an altitude of 244 metres, between the Mirna River to the north and Lim Bay to the south. Options include two hiking trails of different lengths, an easy route for families and recreational cyclists, and group visits to Višnjan Observatory. The historic old town and churches in several settlements within the municipality also shape what the area has to offer.

The marked Owl Trail is 7.7 kilometres long and is suitable for family hikes. It starts in a small pine grove near the Višnjan cemetery and leads to the purpose-built Vena viewpoint. From there, you can see olive groves, vineyards and the sea. The stated distance and viewpoint give you practical guidance when choosing this hike.

The Venetian Lion Trail is 4.5 kilometres long, and takes about 2.5 hours to walk. It passes through historic Višnjan: from Antun Korlević Square, it goes under the arch with the Venetian lion to the old village of Barat and back. This route thus links the historic townscape with a trail to Barat. When making your choice, consider both the stated distance and the approximate duration.

The Star Trail is described as an easy, undemanding route for families and recreational cyclists. It starts and ends in front of Višnjan Town Hall and leads to Tičan. There, you can see the new observatory building with its telescope dome and the Stone Circle installation. The routes therefore differ not only in length but also in the stops and experiences mentioned for each one.

Group visits to Višnjan Observatory are available year-round by prior arrangement. The group programme includes an introductory talk on a scientific or astronomical topic and a tour of the observatory, the telescope dome and the Stone Circle. In suitable weather conditions, it also includes outdoor telescope viewing. For your planning, it is therefore important to note that this option is intended for groups and requires advance booking.

Višnjan Observatory was registered as a public observatory in 1992. Its scientific focus is on small bodies in the Solar System and their interactions with Earth. Astrofest took place in Tičan on 21 June 2023, combining STEM science with the mystical experiences of the shortest night of the year. This date refers to the 2023 event.

The old part of Višnjan sits on a hill and is characterised by closely spaced stone houses and narrow streets. A Baroque loggia stands in the main square of the historic old town. The Church of Saint Anthony the Abbot is at the entrance to the old town and dates from the 13th to 15th centuries. It is known for its 14th-century frescoes and graffiti, including Glagolitic inscriptions.

Other churches also have specific historic features. The small Church of Saint Matthew in Cerion was built in 1588; its façade, including the bell gable and two bells, was renovated in 1935. The Church of Saint James in Bačva dates from 1628 and was built on the site of an earlier church. The Church of Saint Helen of the Cross, dating from the 14th century, stands in Markovac. The Church of Saint Pantaleon in Tičan dates from the 17th century and is also located on the site of an earlier church. The Church of All Saints, also known as the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene, dates from 1530 and is located in a cemetery.
