Coast

Bakarac is described as a coastal village whose shoreline consists of concrete beaches. The Bakarac beach sequence includes Zminca, Kupalište, Mala plažica, Palada, Skalada, Melina, Prva kućica, Sridnja ućica, Sansovo, and Kavranić. Numerous springs ensure a lower sea temperature on the beaches of Bakarac.

Trails and landscape

The Tuna observation posts’ path is an 8-kilometre point-to-point trail with an estimated duration of 2.5 hours; 30 percent of the route runs on asphalt and 70 percent off-road. The trail includes Bakarac and several tuna observation posts along Bakar Bay.

Stazama naših nona is a marked, circular, easy 10.7-kilometre trail suitable for all age groups. The circular route follows the waterfront promenade to Bakarac, continues through Šmrika and Banja, and leads back to Kraljevica. Along Stazama naših nona, mountain hikes, Bark & Hike programmes, and walks for dogs and their owners are organised throughout the year.

The Frankopan roads route passes through Bakarac on both its outward and return journeys. The adventure tour Along the Hunters Paths runs through the forests of Bakarac along old Roman roads and visits an old forest cemetery as well as church buildings overgrown with ivy.

Culture and history

South of Bakarac lies Gradac, an archaeological site with the remains of a Bronze Age fortification. The modest site displays the ruins of ancient structures and remnants of an ancient fortification system. Bakarac also has three Roman milestones. The parish church of Saint Peter the Apostle dates from the 18th century.

The last active tuna observation post was called “Bakarac” and was used until the middle of the 20th century.

Local tradition

Tira, tira is a reconstruction of traditional tuna fishing. The reconstruction can be observed in Bakar Bay from the shore or from boats. Following this reconstruction, Tira, tira offers traditional tuna dishes.
