Lepoglava: Hotels and accommodations

Culture

Construction of the Crkva Sv. Marije in Lepoglava began around 1400; the church was consecrated in 1415. Its interior features Baroque furnishings, wood carvings, Baroque altars, and frescoes by Ivan Krstitelj Ranger.

The Međunarodni festival čipke has been held in Lepoglava since 1997 and traditionally takes place in September. The festival includes workshops on lace-making as well as a market for traditional handicrafts and old crafts.

The Galerija čipke opened in December 2023 in a former storage room beneath the entrance to the Dom kulture in Lepoglava. It is a center for numerous cultural events in Lepoglava. The exhibitions combine Lepoglava’s rich tradition with modern technology and can be viewed by all visitors.

Nature

Visitor facilities have been created at the Gaveznica – Kameni vrh geological natural monument in Lepoglava. Gaveznica, also known as Kameni vrh, is a fossil volcano formed 22 million years ago. The area of Kameni vrh (Gaveznica) is considered the first known site of the semiprecious stone agate in Croatia.

Trails

The 13 km-long trail to Fairy Top begins in the southern part of Lepoglava and leads through the forest to a viewpoint overlooking the Bednja, Ravna gora, Lepoglava, and Varaždin. Along the trail are rest areas, caves, and freshwater springs, including Zmržnjak, Maks well, and Bračko Cave.

The approximately 5 km-long Šumska-vila hiking trail in the eastern area of Lepoglava leads through forests and vineyards, past the Masni kamen waterfall and the Vukovec stream, to a mysterious stone altar.

Religious tradition

The 14 stations of the Stepinčev križni put juxtapose the Passion of Jesus with the suffering of Blessed Alojzije Stepinac. The Stepinčev križni put in Lepoglava is a 1,600-meter-long route that begins at the Stepinac monument in front of the parish church of Bezgrješnog začeća Blažene Djevice Marije, passes by the Kaznionica, and ends at the Chapel of Svetog Ivana Krstitelja on Gorica Mountain. A traditional Stepinčev križni put was held on Palm Sunday in the parish of Bezgrešnog začeća Blažene Djevice Marije in Lepoglava.
