Culture

At Bitinj, the remains of a Neolithic settlement include ceramic, flint and bone artefacts. The Danilo culture is characterized by well-shaped fired vessels such as pots, pans and plates.

Rider on Gradina Hill was the centre of the prehistoric Delmata community of Ridita. Gradina is a prehistoric settlement of the Iron Age community of Ridita.

Šematorij comprises a Roman urban villa complex with baths. An early Christian basilica was built over the baths of the Roman urban villa in Šematorij. Stari Šematorij contains 370 early Croatian graves dating from the 9th to the 15th century, featuring various types of jewellery.

History

Gradina was used again for a settlement in Late Antiquity; water cisterns, walls and settlement structures have been documented. In Roman times, Danilo was known as Rider as a large settlement with more than 10,000 inhabitants.

From the archaeological site in Danilo, visitors can walk to the hill with the remains of the old Gradina fortification. The proposed archaeological journey “Journey Through Time” makes Danilo its first stop.
