The municipality comprises Tisno, Dazlina, Betina, Jezera and Ivinj. Tisno lies partly on the mainland and partly on Murter; its historic centre is on the island side, on the coast below Brošćica Hill. The municipal area encompasses, within a relatively small space, islands, sea, a lake, freshwater springs, karst fields and peloid.
What defines Tisno and its history?
The connection between the two parts of the settlement has a long history: the old bridge in Tisno was built in the early 18th century and replaced by a movable bridge in 1968. Today, a mechanical lift bridge connects the mainland and island sides. Original stone paving has been preserved in some places in the historic centre. Eleven villas remain in Tisno from the period when wealthy families immigrated from Italy in the 18th century. The garden around Villa Meštrov was redesigned as a Baroque park.
The churches also reflect different eras. The Church of the Holy Spirit in Tisno was built in 1548 and renovated in the Baroque style in 1640. The Church of St. Roch was built around 1651 on the coast of Tisno, in an area called Rat. It measures 13 m × 8.6 m. A small chapel was built around 1720 on Brošćica Hill above Tisno.
In Ivinj, a three-aisled basilica dating from the mid-5th century is part of the archaeological site. The site also includes an early Christian baptistery with a hexagonal basin. 900 graves dating from the 15th century were found beside the basilica. At the Church of St. Martin in Ivinj, archaeologists discovered the walls of a Roman villa rustica dating from the 2nd or 3rd century.
Which routes and activities suit your trip?
Ten cycling routes of varying lengths are connected with Murter and the mainland part of the municipality; they are classified as easy to moderate. Six run on the island of Murter. Cycling route 211, “Staza crkve,” connects Murter with the municipality’s mainland hinterland.
For diving enthusiasts, Tisno has professionally organised dive centres offering activities for beginners and experienced divers. There is also an educational maritime trail with seven panels in Sv. Andrija Bay in the Murter Channel. It can be used for both freediving and scuba diving.
Sv. Andrija Beach lies on the southeastern edge of Tisno. It is natural, mostly rocky and surrounded by pine forest. Above Rastovac Beach, there is a children’s playground, a basketball court, a football pitch and a miniature golf course. When exploring the municipality, you can also take its coastal scenery and range of recreational facilities into account.
What should you know about getting there and your stay?
Tisno is connected by bus routes to major European cities via bus stations in Zagreb, Šibenik, Zadar and Split. The municipality also has a strong culinary tradition, including salted sardines and Dalmatian pršut served with cheese and olives. When planning your trip to the Municipality of Tisno, you can therefore take both cultural and sporting interests and regional cuisine into account.
An annual event is the Feast of Our Lady of Karavaj, celebrated in Tisno on 26 May. Believers from the surrounding counties and beyond attend. The pilgrimage route to the sanctuary has 214 steps.
