Many old stone houses and characteristic narrow alleys have been preserved in the historic centre of Igrane. The village’s buildings include several churches and chapels representing different historical periods and features.
Culture and History
The Župna crkva Gospe od Ružarija was built in 1752. In 1939, it was expanded with two side chapels, giving it the layout of a Latin cross. The church also contains a Venetian silver processional cross from the 18th century.
The Crkva Svetog Mihovila was built towards the end of the 11th century and has been under state protection as a cultural monument since 1962. It is a three-nave Romanesque church and one of the few chapels of its kind in southern Croatia.
Zalina Kula is one of the significant towers on the Makarska Riviera. The tower is associated with Ivan Antičić Zale, who defended Igrane against an Ottoman attack in 1687.
In the central part of Igrane stands the summer residence of the Šimić-Ivanišević family, built in the Baroque style in the 18th century. The Kapelica Bezgriješnog Začeča was built by the Ivanišević-Šimić family next to their palace. The Crkvica Svetog Nikole biskupa was built in 1925 in the local cemetery. The Kapelica Gospe Pomoćnice kršćana was built at the Oštra site above the village and later rebuilt after its demolition during the construction of the Adriatic Highway. The Kapelica Presvetog Trojstva was built to fulfil a vow made by Juraj Parun.
