Nature

Živogošće has approximately six kilometres of interconnected beaches with activities by the sea. They lie below the summit of Sutvid, whose elevation is given as 1,155 metres. Velika Kapela and Štropac are located in the vicinity of Živogošće; Sveti Mihovil and Sveti Stipan are also nearby. Sućuraj and Čačkova Pećina are located in the surrounding area; Sveti Ilija and Sveta Marija are likewise situated in the surrounding area.

Culture and History

The Licinianus Epigram is dated to the year 474, carved into a rock above the water at Pokrivenica by the sea, and consists of 16 Latin hexameters. In Živogošće, there are Illyrian burial mounds on Suzine Hill, as well as remains of rustic Roman villas in Mala Duba and Blato.

The monastery in Živogošće was founded in 1616 and historically served for centuries as a centre of regional spiritual life and literary culture. Historically, it had a rich library and valuable works of art.

Activities

For leisure activities, Živogošće offers cycling and hiking trails. Coastal activities include water skiing, diving and cruises along the Dalmatian islands.

The local cuisine includes regional recipes and seafood, especially freshly caught grilled fish, accompanied by locally produced wine and olive oil.
