Podgora: Hotels and Accommodations

Coast and Landscape

Near Podgora lies the Drašnice free-climbing area on rocks above Drašnice. The slab routes require precision and endurance and offer views of the sea as well as the islands of Brač and Hvar. The wider Podgora area has numerous freshwater springs; at the beginning of the 20th century, the streams flowing from them powered 24 mills.

History and Culture

The Galebova krila monument was designed by architect Rajko Radović. It was erected above Upper Podgora in 1962 to commemorate the Partisan Navy, which had been founded in Podgora two decades earlier. The broken and upright wings symbolize the sailors who fell fighting for freedom and the ascent to victory.

The prehistoric archaeological site of Troje gomile consists of four burial mounds that also served as viewpoints; three have been partially preserved, while the fourth was excavated. The remains of the Roščića Tower in Upper Podgora belonged to a defense system built in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Podgorsko ljeto is a festival for locals and foreign tourists. The regular program includes theater, musicals, children's theater, pop, classical and klapa concerts, fishermen's nights, folklore and exhibitions. The venues are spread throughout the town and include, among others, hotel and bar terraces, squares and beaches.

Activities

The Birgmaier-sub diving center offers diving courses and excursions to around ten dive sites around Podgora. It also rents diving equipment to experienced divers.

On the water, Podgora offers tube and banana boat rides. Visitors can rent a jet ski or speedboat for excursions to Brač or Hvar. Parasailing is also available in Podgora, with a parachute pulled by a speedboat. Cycling and hiking trails from Podgora lead to Tučepi or Baška Voda.

Cuisine

Podgora has a centuries-old tradition of producing extra virgin olive oil. The oil can be tasted with sheep's cheese, local wines, fish or salad. The indigenous grape varieties plavac and pošip are grown in Podgora and pair well with fish and seafood.
