Kamen: Hotels and Accommodation

The place name Kamen derives from a large, free-standing rock with a flat top; in medieval records, the site appears as Visoka stijena and Magna petra. Those wishing to book a hotel in Kamen can then continue their accommodation search.

History and Culture

A fortification called Kod kamena was commissioned in 1239 as a refuge from raiders. After 1420, Kamen served as a small fortress to protect against Ottoman incursions. Ottoman troops held Kamen from 1571 to 1648. The remains of the medieval Kamen Fortress are designated as one of Split's most important fortification resources. The Church of St. Peter on Kamen and its archaeological site are listed under cultural heritage register number Z-5172.

Churches and Faith

The Church of St. Michael the Archangel was built in its present form in 1879 and restored in 1909. It stands on the site of an older church dating from 1675. Inside is a late-18th-century painting by Feliks Tironi: the Madonna and Child, along with Saints George and Michael. Michael also has a free-standing bell tower, built on a nearby cliff in the form of a tower.

Peter was first mentioned in 1227 and was built in the late 12th or early 13th century. It is a single-nave building with a semicircular apse. The façade features a stone cross and a small quatrefoil rose window. The church is located near Brižine in Badu below the village of Kamen and was expanded in 1675 after the area had been freed from Ottoman rule. The parish lists separate winter and summer Mass schedules for the Church of St. Michael, including services on Sundays and weekdays.

The restored Templar Church of St. Peter was blessed on June 28, 2026. It was intended as a place of prayer and spiritual encounter. The restoration project aimed to reopen the church to the faithful. Special sightseeing tours were developed for Kamen.

Music

Klapa Kamen was founded by Ante Barić in 1958 and has been continuously active since its reunification in 1974. It performed at 34 editions of the Omiš Festival of Dalmatian Klapas and won 21 awards there. Klapa Kamen also held more than ten concerts at KD Vatroslav Lisinski and performed at more than ten Split Festivals.
