Culture

In the Veljani district of Donje Biljane, a church with an archaeological site is listed as immovable cultural heritage. The church and archaeological site near Veljani are located in the hamlet of Veljane in Donje Biljane; a necropolis surrounds the church at the archaeological site in Veljani. Donje Biljane’s cultural heritage also includes the early Christian and Romanesque church with the remains of a rustic villa near Begovača, as well as preserved examples of rural folk architecture.

In Donje Biljane, the Crkvini archaeological site includes the remains of a Roman country estate, the ruins of an early Croatian church from the 9th century, which is described on the basis of its construction as a distinct type of three-nave church architecture in Dalmatia, as well as 604 excavated early Croatian graves containing earrings and rings dating from the 9th to the 15th century.

The remains of a pre-Romanesque church near Begovača show that it was built in the second half of the 9th century. Rescue excavations were carried out in 1972 and 1973 at the Trljuge site in Donje Biljane, at an early Croatian cemetery; 27 graves were excavated, 17 of which displayed pagan and 10 Christian burial characteristics.
