Liteň is defined by Liteň Château and its cultural surroundings. The château is a protected Renaissance cultural monument with Baroque alterations and a park; at the same time, it is associated with the poet Svatopluk Čech.

Cultural and architectural history

The protected Daubek family crypt is part of the historic architecture. The Neo-Renaissance building was constructed in 1888 based on a design by Antonín Wiehl. The Jewish cemetery in Liteň also points to the town’s long history: it was established in 1680 and includes Baroque tombstones and a Neo-Romanesque mortuary chapel.

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul was originally a Gothic church from the 13th century and was rebuilt in the Baroque style in the 17th century. Liteň also features a protected statue of Svatopluk Čech, created in the 1930s at the Hořice stonecutting school based on a design by J. Mach. A monument with an over-life-size statue in the municipal gardens commemorates Čech’s four-year stay there during his childhood and the setting of his poem “Ve stínu lípy”.

The collection of Zámek Liteň comprises 57 registered objects of visual culture from the legacies of Jarmila Novotná and the Daubek family. The local museum is housed in the former rectory; visitors can learn about the lives of Jarmila Novotná and Svatopluk Čech there.

Festival and cultural program

The Jarmila Novotná Festival was established as part of efforts to revive cultural and musical life in the grounds of Liteň Château. The grounds are historically associated with the Daubek family and the opera singer Jarmila Novotná. The program regularly brings together music, education, film, theater, visual arts, and other creative disciplines.

Educational trail, park, and location

Liteň’s monuments and sights are connected by the extensive Liteň educational trail route. Liteň is located in the Český kras.

The park of Liteň Château is once again open to the public following its successful revitalization carried out in 2012 and 2013.
