Nature

Křivoklátsko is 62 % forested and consists predominantly of deciduous and mixed forests. The Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area also includes part of the former Beroun District. The Koněpruské Caves are important as protected habitats for bats and greater horseshoe bats. From a viewpoint on Svatojánská skála, there is a view of the monastery complex and the Loděnice Valley.

Culture

The tourist attractions of Berounsko include Karlštejn and Křivoklát castles. Karlštejn Castle was founded by Charles IV in 1348 to store royal treasures, relics and the imperial coronation jewels. The historic centre of Beroun is protected as an urban heritage zone; its medieval fortifications are unusually well preserved. In Beroun, a long-established pottery market takes place in the main square in spring and autumn.

Svatý Jan pod Skalou is both a pilgrimage site and a tourist destination in the Bohemian Karst. The village is associated with a former Benedictine monastery and the hermit saint Ivan.

Experiences

The Koněpruské Caves extend across three levels, with a total of 2,050 metres of explored passages and chambers. The public visitor route through the caves is 620 metres long. At Solvayovy lomy, visitors can ride a small train, see an exhibition about the cableway and enter an underground tunnel. At the same time, Solvayovy lomy in the Bohemian Karst are being developed into an open-air industrial museum focusing on the history of limestone quarrying and transport.

Tours of the Rückl glassworks demonstrate traditional glassmaking techniques, including hand-blown glass. The St. Ludmila Trail is approximately 132 kilometres long and divided into 11 stages; three stages lead through Berounsko.

Getting around

The described Krasobus route connects Karlštejn railway station with Srbsko, Beroun–Hostim, Svatý Jan pod Skalou, Loděnice, Bubovice, Mořina, Mořinka and Hlásná Třebaň. The Berounka has a gentle character, is navigable year-round and is suitable for beginners. Dům přírody Českého krasu is a visitor centre for the protected landscape area at Zlatý kůň near Koněprusy.
