Opolany combines natural and cultural attractions with a history reaching back to prehistoric periods. The Oškobrh nature monument covers the cadastral area of Opolany and protects the population of the stag beetle (Lucanus cervus) and its habitat: xerothermic steppe grasslands, exposed marl deposits, and the species dependent on these locations.
Nature and Landscape
The Sánský Canal has survived to this day. It flows through Opolánky and passes Opolany, Odřepsy, Pátek, and Křečkov. It was built around 1450 by Jiří z Kunštátu to divert water from the Cidlina River to the Poděbrady ponds.
Archaeology and History
A hilltop settlement and a hillfort from several prehistoric periods have been documented in the summit area of Oškobrh. The Oškobrh archaeological site also includes the location of the former Church of St. Peter and Paul.
Trails in the Surrounding Area
A hike to Oškobrh can begin in Opolany. The Opolany–Velký Osek educational cycle route features information boards and navigation stands and provides a safe and convenient connection for pedestrians and cyclists, including tourists, in the surroundings of the municipalities of Opolánky, Opolany, Kánín, Sány, and Velký Osek. It connects two major cycle routes via the newly constructed motorway section and uses existing paths.
Evangelical Heritage
The Evangelical Reformed congregation in Opolany was established in 1885. The Evangelical church in Opolany was built in 1892–1893 and was ceremonially dedicated on 8 September 1893 by Superintendent J. E. Szalatnay.
The Evangelical cemetery in Opolany was established in 1899. Its gravestones have a uniform design; the cemetery of the Unity of the Brethren in Herrnhut (Ochranov) in Upper Lusatia served as its model. Because of the uniform design of the graves, the cemetery was declared a state cultural monument in 1989.
