Kovanice: Hotels and Accommodation

Kovanice combines tangible evidence of local history with paths along the Elbe. Around the church, cemetery, and château, the town reveals itself through a variety of historical and landscape features.

Culture and History

At the Church of St. Wenceslas stands a life-size sandstone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. It is located approximately 15 metres northwest of the enclosing wall of the cemetery grounds; the date 1728 is engraved in its pedestal. The statue belongs to a group of 18th-century stone sculptures created in the workshop of Josef Jiří Jelínek in Kosmonosy.

The Jewish cemetery in Kovanice was established in 1830 as a burial site for the Jewish communities of Kovanice, Nymburk, Poděbrady, and Křinec. It covers 1,457 square metres, with 282 gravestones arranged in regular rows. A memorial plaque at the entrance commemorates the victims of the Holocaust. The cemetery is locked; the key is available from the Kovanice Municipal Office.

The Church of St. Wenceslas contains a painting of Saint Wenceslas by V. Kramolín dating from around 1770.

The château in Kovanice is a small château on the Elbe River. It is protected together with the enclosing wall and gate of the former park, as well as the enclosed plot of land. The war memorial to the victims of the First World War is listed among the sights on the official website of the Municipality of Kovanice.

Nature and Paths

The cycle path leading to Kovanice runs along the left bank of the Elbe and mostly in the immediate vicinity of the river. The improved path leading to Kovanice is designed for pedestrians and cyclists.
