Culture and History
The Church of Saint Lawrence in Vavřinec is a Neo-Gothic church built in 1876–1877 to a design by the architect František Schmoranz. In Vavřinec, it is listed as an immovable cultural monument under designation 1204.
The settlement of Vavřinec was founded in the 14th century together with its church by monks from the Sázava Monastery of Saint Procopius. Another surviving historic building in Vavřinec is the Baroque Church of Saint Nicholas from the mid-18th century. Also preserved is an original granary of the Jesuit order on the site of a former fortress.
The pilgrimage festival “Pouť ve Vavřinci a Žíšově” includes roasting and music in August.
Landscape
The Výrovka flows through Vavřinec and empties into the Elbe. The Vavřinec district is home to the extensive Vavřinecký rybník. In the Vavřinec planning area, it is the largest of three major bodies of water; Vavřinecký rybník is also designated as regional biocentre No. 956.
Connections
Vavřinec has direct bus connections to Uhlířské Janovice, Zásmuky, Kolín and Žíželice. Train connections run towards Ledečko and Kolín.
