Culture and history

Kutná Hora developed through silver mining and became a royal town in the 14th century. The historic center of Kutná Hora, St. Barbara’s Church, and the Church of Our Lady in Sedlec together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

St. Barbara’s Church is a Gothic landmark. Inside, frescoes depict the secular life of the medieval mining town of Kutná Hora. The former Cistercian cathedral in Sedlec was restored in the early 18th century by Jan Blažej Santini in the Baroque style.

The Empire-style Kačina Château houses the Museum of Czech Rural Life. The château includes a Chotek library, salons, a historic pharmacy, and a historic theater. Guided tours cover the history of the Chotek family, the everyday life of servants, and the changes in aristocratic estates during the 19th century.

Experiences and routes

The Hrádek Silver Route covers medieval mining, silver processing, coin minting, a horse-powered trejv, and an authentic medieval mine. The medieval mine in Kutná Hora is accessible to visitors via a 33-meter-long staircase; traditional miners’ clothing, helmets, and lamps are used.

The red-marked trail from Žleby continues through Ronov nad Doubravou, Žlebské Chvalovice, Krkanka, and Rudov to the ruins of Lichnice Castle. At Zruč Château, the route includes ax throwing, archery, climbing, balance obstacles, fishing, and bowling at the Milota of Kolowrat area.

The Příběh řeky Sázavy exhibition in Zruč nad Sázavou covers vanished water-related crafts as well as the plants and animals of the Sázava.

Visitor information

A train station is about a 15-minute walk from Žleby Château. A bus stop is located in the square directly below the château. Two parking lots are located near the château grounds.

One ticket includes admission to both chapels of the ossuary as well as to the Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady and St. John the Baptist in Sedlec, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Nature and landscape

Žleby Château Park covers approximately 24 hectares and makes use of the steep château slope and a gorge-like bend of the Doubrava River. More than 50 species of small and songbirds live in the park; there is also a reserve where white deer and fallow deer are kept.

The Kačina Natural Monument comprises preserved hardwood floodplain forests, wetlands, and wet meadows and is known for its rare insects.

Wine and cuisine

Kutná Hora Winery offers an enogastronomic tasting pairing five local wines with dishes made from locally sourced ingredients. Wine tastings at the St. Ursula Monastery include tours of the historic monastery cellars.
