Chotovice: Cultural Monument, Nature Trail and Hiking Route 0448

In Chotovice, St. Procopius Church has been a protected cultural monument since May 1958.

Culture and Townscape

St. Procopius Church is a branch church of the Roman Catholic parish of Nové Hrady u Skutče. In Chotovice, it is used for cultural events. These include regular singing, music-making by children and young people, and exhibitions of nativity scenes.

On “Hlavátky”, a stone cross dominates the village centre. In 1890, it was donated by the cottager Václav Jůza, house number 58. The cross was completely dismantled, cleaned and repaired, and now shines in its former condition once again.

The cemetery around St. Procopius Church looks old and is considered one of the most picturesque cemeteries in the Litomyšl region. There are two viewpoints with seating near the church.

The church surroundings thus combine architectural history, ecclesiastical use, cultural events and places of remembrance. The stone cross on “Hlavátky” is just as much a part of the townscape as the cemetery; the viewpoints complement this area with places offering views and seating.

Nature

Located at an elevation of 480 metres, St. Procopius Church offers views over the Litomyšl Basin and the Orlické Mountains; in favourable weather, Sněžka is also visible.

Another connection with nature leads to the Čapí educational trail in the Franze Hantschela Forest Park. The nature trail offers a walk through the countryside, during which you can learn about the life of storks and the surrounding area.

The nature trail and the viewpoints differ in their format: the trail focuses on a walk through the forest park, with its stork life and surroundings, while the viewpoints specify seating. This allows you to choose between a path through nature and a location-specific place to spend time.

Hiking

The marked hiking route 0448 leads from Litomyšl to Budislav and runs through Chotovice. On this route, “Chotovice – kostel” is listed at 14.3 km and “Chotovice – náves” at 14.6 km.

The two kilometre markers belong to the same marked connection. They place the named points along the route and thus distinguish two orientation points on the way from Litomyšl via Chotovice to Budislav.

Local Topics

The municipality of Chotovice held the Unconventional Firefighting Competition “O pohár obce Chotovice” through and including its fifth edition. The event included an unusual attack using an Avia vehicle, a classic firefighting attack over 80 metres and races in tubs.

At the traditional “Rožnění prasátka”, three pork knuckles were roasted on a spit.

The local examples therefore range from a firefighting competition with several disciplines to a culinary tradition. Together with the cultural events at the church, they create a picture of various forms of community life without having to reduce them to a single local motif.
