Nature

Culture and History

The castle was built for Vratislav of Pernštejn between 1568 and 1581 by Giovanni Battista and Ulrico Aostalli. A late-18th-century theatre survives with its original painted decoration, stage sets and stage machinery. The brewery next to the castle is the birthplace of the composer Bedřich Smetana.

The medieval town walls of Polička extend for 1,220 metres and include 19 bastions. The Bohuslav Martinů Centre in Polička offers modern exhibitions on music and history.

The heritage circuit in Svitavy can be completed on foot in less than two hours. The Esperanto Museum is housed on the ground floor of the Ottendorfer House in Svitavy. It presents the history, culture, literature and practical use of Esperanto, with a particular focus on Svitavy and the Pardubice Region.

Historic Sites and Technology

A tour of Svojanov Castle includes the kitchen, pantry and furnished 19th-century palace rooms. The underground tour includes a torture chamber and a lapidarium. Visitors can climb to the viewing platform at the top of the 26-metre-high Hláska Tower.

The Mladějov industrial railway is an eleven-kilometre-long narrow-gauge railway with a track gauge of 600 millimetres. It was built to transport clay, fireclay and local coal.
